Gynecomastia (Male Breast)

Gynecomastia is a female-type enlargement of the breast tissue in men. Gynecomastia is not always a sign of disease and the most common causes are hormonal changes of unknown origin or obesity. It can also be triggered by side effects of certain medications or hormone imbalances.

Gynecomastia is most commonly seen in men during puberty or older, usually due to hormonal changes. However, other health problems that cause gynecomastia should also be examined in these patients. Approximately 40% of men suffer from gynecomastia and this condition can lead to a lack of self-confidence and cause serious psychological problems. Gynecomastia operation stands out as the most effective method to solve this problem. Gynecomastia is classified into three main types:

  1. Glandular Type: True breast tissue increase,
  2. Lipomatous Type: Increased fat tissue,
  3. Mixed Type: Increase in both breast tissue and fat tissue.

Treatment methods differ according to these types. Before the operation, an ultrasound examination of the mass can be performed to determine whether the mass originates only from adipose tissue or from breast tissue.

Operation Age

Since gynecomastia complaints that occur during puberty may be due to hormonal changes during this period, it is recommended to wait at least 2 years for surgical intervention. In the post-puberty period, gynecomastia that does not regress within 2 years is suitable for surgical operation. After puberty, it is usually sufficient to wait 1 year for patients who develop gynecomastia.

Pre-Operation Interview

During the interview, first of all, your complaints about your current breasts and your expectations after the operation are evaluated. You will be given detailed information about the image that may occur after the operation. Pre- and post-operative photos of patients who have undergone previous operations are shown. When you decide on the operation, my assistant will plan a suitable operation date for you.

Preparation for Operation Time

  • Aspirin and derivative drugs should be discontinued one week before the operation. (Do not discontinue your regular medications without consulting your doctor.)
  • Smoking should be avoided for a while before and after the operation.
  • On the day of the operation, do not use hair gel, wear comfortable clothes and leave your jewelry at home.
  • Nothing should be eaten or drunk 6 hours before the operation.
  • You should be at the hospital about two hours before the operation.
  • When you arrive at your reserved room, you will be given oral medication, if you wish, which will relax you.

Operation Technique

  • Laser liposuction or Liposuction technique solves the problem of most patients, except for very advanced cases of gynecomastia.
  • With this technique, fat and breast tissue are aspirated through holes that only small cannulas can enter, leaving no obvious scar on the breast.
  • Nipple and breast circumference depressions are almost never visible in laser or liposuction techniques.

Anesthesia Type

Gynecomastia surgery can be performed under local, general or sedation anesthesia depending on its size. In small cases, local anesthesia is applied and patients remain awake. In larger cases, general anesthesia is preferred and the patient is completely asleep. Sedation anesthesia is used to relax the patient, but the patient remains awake. The choice of anesthesia is based on the surgeon’s preference and the patient’s condition.

Operation Duration

Gynecomastia surgery usually takes 1 hour. However, this time may vary slightly depending on the size of the cases and the technique used. The operation time is usually kept short to ensure early recovery.

Recovery Process

After the operation, a gynecomastia corset is worn.
After the operation, you can start eating and drinking after about 4 hours of bed rest and you can stand up and walk.
You are usually discharged in the evening on the same day without staying in the hospital.

  1. You will be checked again every day and your dressing will be changed.
  2. After a day you can take a bath. 4. You can return to normal life and start your work within days.

Light exercises that do not tire you too much (such as walking) can be done on the 10th day at the earliest, while more active exercises (swimming, running, other sports) can be started from the 2nd month.

It is normal to have pempemsi color changes and swelling after gynecomastia operation. These symptoms mostly regress in the 3rd week.

After a week, you become more aware of the new shape the operation has given your body and start to enjoy it.
After this period, the shaping process continues until the 6th month.
